In a national referendum in September of 2022 Cubans approved a ‘new family law code’ allowing same sex couples to marry.
The new family code also
Allows surrogate pregnancies
Provides broader rights for grandparents in relation to grandchildren
Gives greater protection for the elderly
Provides measures against gender violence,
Gives gay couples the right to adopt
Acknowledges co-responsibility of parents in their child’s education
The approval by 66.9% (3.9mn votes) of the population is seen as a positive step towards progression in a country where historically gays were persecuted and sent to work camps for ‘re-education’. On hearing the outcome of the vote Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel declared ‘Justice has been done’.
How This Affects Tourism, Honeymooning and Getting Married in Cuba
This is great news for the tourist industry in Cuba as the vote follows a joint venture between Muthu Hotels and Gaviota (Cuba’s military - run tourist company) ‘The Gran Muthu Rainbow Hotel’ re-opened it’s doors (Cuba’s first LGBT hotel) , with a second hotel ‘Hotal Telegrafo’ part of Axel Hotel Group, also recently opened and positively supporting the LGBT community.
Tourism is a major focus for the Cuban economy however it should be noted that there is controversy surrounding the Industry in that workers for the state-owned hotels are paid through an employment agency controlled by Gaesa / Gaviota with a large proportion of their salary being taken by the military; so it is important if you are staying in these hotels to tip well.
As of mid 2022, Gaviota reported the operation of 105 hotels under three brands Gaviota Hoteles, Hoteles Playa and Hoteles Habaguanex.
The first same sex marriage was performed in Cuba on 5th October 2022.
We are currently helping our first same sex couple with the legalization of their paperwork so they can get married in Cuba soon and look forward to helping you do the same.
