What is an Affidavit of Single Status?

In order to get married in Cuba as an American or Canadian citizen, a few documents are mandatory for you to have.

One of the most important mandatory documents is called the Affidavit of Single Status. This document also goes by several other names, including:

  • Certificate of Single Status

  • Declaration of Single Status

  • Single Status Declaration

The Affidavit or Declaration of Single Status doesn't have any counterpart in the United States or Canada. However, it is a common document needed to get married in many current and former communist countries including Cuba, China, Vietnam, and many countries of the former Soviet Union.

This affidavit declares that you are legally able to marry in Cuba because you are not currently married anywhere else. It also confirms certain details about your identity which are mandatory to provide to the Cuban government.

Our office will draft your Affidavit of Single Status for you to make sure there are no mistakes which could keep you from getting married in Cuba.

A few things to be careful of when you are getting your Declaration of Single Status:

  • Your affidavit must follow a format accepted by the Cuban Consulate in order to be legalized.

  • Affidavits of Single Status MUST follow a specific format in certain US states, otherwise they cannot be notarized and otherwise validated.

  • Your signed Declaration of Single Status is only valid for 6 months for marriage in Cuba.

  • An Affidavit or Declaration of Single Status carries the same weight as a sworn statement made in court - make sure that the information is accurate.

Make sure your Affidavit or Declaration of Single Status is done correctly so that you can get married in Cuba without any problems.
